A friend of mine, a 50-year-old Army vet who voted for Bush, suggested a McCain/Edwards ticket. I said I'd vote for that. He replied that almost everyone he knew said they'd vote for that. McCain is president I might not always agree with, but at least I could respect him. And Edwards's populism (in word if not deed) appeals deeply to me as a native of Huey P. Long's Louisiana.
The hard line between Republican and Democrat, between red and blue states, is a fiction of, by, and for certain individuals who are in a position to influence the available choices.
