...Trot and Cap'n Bill were free from anxiety and care. Button-Bright never worried about anything. The Scarecrow, not being able to sleep, looked out of the window and tried to count the stars.

Grabbing a spare 5 minutes at work to say how much I enjoyed Umfum family favourites and Which Came First?

The first disc (umfum family favourites) holds together really well and works as a compilation - I am working on the art of inserting snippets of dialogue to enhance tracks. The first ever recording of Thomas Edison is a real bonus. I'm I was especially pleased at the Prince track, which I really liked despite not liking a lot of Prince's other stuff that much. It's hard to pick out one track as a favourite,OK so Foo Fighters are faves of mine; but the whole thing just works together really well. I'm going to listen to it again now.

"Which Came First?" is quality umfum - lots of jazz (particularly liked the Herbie Hancock) and some prog rock, held together with some utterly bizzare dialogue and found sound. Not the first time chickens have featured in a release, coincidence?
This is going to be up there in the pecking order of my CD playlist for a long time.

Verdict: "Two more solid releases from this consistently original musical stable (or should that be henhouse?) Clucking-A"

Thanks. Glad you like it. I spent way too much time tweaking the tracks and their order. I could have filled another half of a CD with the stuff I ended up cutting.

I meant to send an info sheet on this disc, but forgot in the haste to get them posted (truly post haste). I'll try to finish soon and email it.

I wasn't sure if anyone would be able to listen to that disc more than once, but I had some leftovers after making "Twang, Violence, and Chicken" a couple of swaps ago. Once I realized I had a few Egg songs in my collection, I couldn't resist cooking up such a weird compilation.

BTW, you can either thank or blame choadwarrior for telling me about Super Chicken early one morning in chat. Once I sampled a few nuggets, I knew a couple had to be included.

Color me pink, cause I'm done tickled!

That might be the most horrible sentence I've ever written. What I want to say is that I received shipment from TheGov today and have already listened to:

FIFTEEN:

First off, fuzzyman now has serious competition for the "Best Packaging" Swappie Award. Actual booklets for the discs? Get the hell out of here! Awesome job. And the covers will (okay, should) crack you up. I'm not saying too much because I don't wish ruining the surprise for others. On with the show...

01) Nice track. One of my favorites from Bleach.
02) Excellent pick. I listened to this cassette (yes) many, many times after it first came out. Gordon really loves that "It's a big enough umbrella lyric," don't he?
03) Okay, it's by this track that I'm wondering if these songs are from 1990 (or close by) -- thus, the compilation title -- or if they're songs from when TheGov was 15. Hadn't read the notes at this point as I was out on my afternoon walk.
04) Really like this one. Can't decide if I've heard it before or not.
05) Just keeps getting better.
06) More echoes from college (I'm a bit older than TheGov :). I usually put "Black" on my mix tapes, but all the tracks are high quality.
07) Never really paid attention to this song when it was out, but it still sounds pretty good -- especially considering what the group is putting out nowadays.
08) I was a bit too old to associate myself with this one too strongly, but it's quite better now than I remember it being then.
09) I've denigrated this band before, but that's only because their subsequent works didn't appeal to me as strongly as their songs from this era. Very good.
10) Unfortunately, I never had any weird aunts or uncles with enough taste to scam music off of. Classic.
11) A bit of a goof, but it ends well.
12) I guess one of those songs had to appear on here. Good choice. Bemusedly reminds me that I once loved this group (and the excess of the two releases).
13) I like the band name better than the song.
14) Damn, you were lucky all this stuff came out when you were 15. I had to put up with Bananarama, The Bangles, and Whitney Houston!
15) Nicely constructed. I like the oddness of that guitar chord. See, you can teach a grumpy umfum new tricks.
16) My Mom's 45 collection introduced me to The Beatles at an earlier age than 15, but that's the subject of my own future swap release. Beep, beep, yeah.
17) Didn't really "go" for this one.
18) If it's Pulp Fiction, it's got to be good.
19) Oddly enough, earlier today before I even received these discs, I was thinking about posting a jokey thread about how "Wanted Dead or Alive" was the greatest song of all time. When did it come out? When I was...16! Oh, maybe it's not so odd after all.

I'll post my final thoughts after I hear "Twenty Five." Seems appropriate.

Hey, are you other turkeys ever going to say anything about my discs? Don't be shy.

Since most of these songs were new to me, I took some extra time listening to:

TWENTY FIVE:

Surely the others have received their discs by now, so I'll post the tracks in case you don't have them handy (or have somehow forgotten what you put on disc:).

01) Introduction. Funny. I've forgotten who said that (if it was "anyone" to begin with).
02) Fire Coming Out Of A Monkey's Head. Wow, this is GORILLAZ? I really like it. Excellent bumpage.
03) Dimples And Toes. Cute, much like the subject matter.
04) Cancon Del Mariachi. I like Los Lobos in small doses. This dosage was just right.
05) Plug In Baby. Never heard much of this group, but the guitar work is super. Will have to DL me some Muse.
06) Powerhouse. Big, Bold, Brassy, Beautiful, Baby. Can't help but think of Saturday mornings.
07) Making Me Nervous. I'll have to go DL this song as well for comparison purposes, but you've gotten dark and dirty right on the nose. Great mix!
08) Blueberry Boat. I often dislike groups who are odd for the sake of being odd unless there's some underlying quality musicianship going on. I was enthralled and entertained by THE FIERY FURNACES.
09) Queue. Definitely some talent here. I hope these guys can make something of themselves in London. I think a good producer could make their sound even better.
10) My Second Wife. These shorts are pretty good when interspersed with this material, but I don't think I'd make it through a whole disc of 'em.
11) Burning Of The Midnight Lamp. You know, you don't hear a lot of harpsichord these days. Thank you, Jimi.
12) Signs. Were I closer to 25 than 35, I suspect I'd like this even better. Good stuff, though.
13) 1000 Umbrellas. I'm surprised Sting didn't show up in this song somewhere! ;) XTC knows how to craft great pop songs; I wish they'd do it more often.
14) Act Of Being Polite. More pedestrian than residential.
15) Strict Machine. Different than the usual GOLDFRAPP. Is there even such a thing as "usual GOLDFRAPP?" Either way, I like.
16) Fiery Pyre. Good sound. Music reminds me of something from Pete (LaRoca) Sims' Turkish Women at the Bath. And I like the way the words are enveloped by the music.
17) Mama And Papa. The lunatic is on the SUPERGRASS. Sorry, the intro reminds me of FLOYD just a bit. Very pleasant.
18) Yesterdays Mistakes. Sexy vixen voicing juxtaposed with choice chanting. Cool.
19) Midnight Cowboy. Didn't jes include this on an earlier swap? No matter, it's still great. However, I will have to get both of you back with "Rhinestone Cowboy" on a future swap.
20) Crimson King. KING CRIMSON. Now you're just pandering to me. :)
21) Ribbons And Leaves. Stately progression is oddly skewered by the Emo Philips-like vocals. Yet, it all works.

Taken together, these discs offer great insight into the musical life and growth therein of TheGovernor. I tend to like these quite personal efforts all the more for their honesty. Inevitably, a certain vitality slips through and is transmitted from the compiler to the listener. I suppose that's why I enjoy these Swaps so much. We might be able to hide ourselves behind jokes, but a simple shared song sometimes reveals more than we'd ever admit. Aces, Gov.

Umfum Family Favourites

1. Mary had a little Lamb - She sure did. Good ol' Tommy showing us how its all done.
2. Where you going - very chilled out. I like it.
3. Sea of Heartbreak - Hitting a little too close to home lyrically, good song tho
4. You're a dumbass - Never liked that 70s show. But quotewise top notch
5. Dear Prudence - TUNE! and then some!
6. Starfish and Coffee - aside from the obvious (purple rains and partying like its 1999 etc) Ive kind of been lacking on the prince department, sadly I was just beginning to discover music properly when he decided to change his name to a symbol and hence was condemned as a cunt at least by me. He does have some quality tunes tho, and I like the elegant simplicity of this one.
7. Tangerine - wonderful truely wonderful, Led Zep never fail to hit the spot.
8. Bring on the Night - The Police are great, Stings early solo carreer was great, his latest work, shite. Bring on the Night is an excellent song, and is a Guv family favourite aswell.
9. Harm our people - I wont get into the politics of this gob shite, but just say like in England, western democracy isnt about choice anymore, its simply a popularity contest to get the pleb vote.
10. Crash Course in Brain Surgery - I like this song, may have to download the album!!!
11. Summertime in Wintertime - I like badly drawn boy. There I said it, its like a weight off my chest.
12. Hey Johnny Park - Canny
13. Theres no room for you here - Ive started liking the stripes a lot.
14. Stonehenge - No comment necessary.
15. It must be a camel - I tend to be more into zappa now than I was, I read his 'book' and it was an eye opener. good tune.
16. Big Eater - Right up my street
17. Excursions - so so, not really my scene.
18. Twenty Dollar Whore - indeed
19. Soulful Strut - Cool
20. Sexx Laws - I like Beck, some of his albums are shit tho, this song is one of his better ones tho.
21. Novelty Act - I didnt know ED knew me?
22. Cant keep my mits off your tits - Wonderful, Sublime, great.
23. Love for Sale - A solid Costello number
24. Bens Music - Ace
25. Road - I cant fault any Drake song Ive had the pleasure of listening to thus far. Died well before his time.
26. The Late Greats - This is great, Id never heard of Wilco before, but Im definately checking them out properly soon.
27. Tears in the Rain - Rutger Hauer The Pure Genius.

Well there are compilations cds, and then there are Umfum compilation CDs. Ive got to say this is a fantastic one, and anyone fortunate enough to be in an Umfum group is never disappointed, I side swapped with him in the past aswell still have all of them on my stereo shortlist (a pile of cds I shuffle through). As for this one, it made me smile, which is a precious commodity, Ive not been in the best of fettles (moods) lately, anyone who reads between the lines of my comments on track 3 may realise why, but the fact is that this is a quality cd on one which will no doubt be played a lot in the future.

I cant be arsed to make up a comedy cd grading scale, lets just say this was Ace and leave it at that.

thanks umfum.

Which Came First?

01. Chicken Impossible - Marvellous
02. Egg Man - Average Beasties
03. I Am Super Chicken - No I am Super chicken, or was that Spartacus?
04. Super Chicken Theme - The Zorro of the Chicken world
05. The Egg - Hancock can be taken fried, scrambled or poached, he's still wonderful and I always like jazz for breakfast
06. Eat that Chicken - great song
07. Ham 'N' Eggs - canny, not my cup of tea tho.
08. Five Piece Chicken Dinner - Cool Beasties short
09. Run Chicken Run - Fab
10. Egg Radio - This song is wonderful (im doing my best not to start 'cracking' jokes.....nevermind)
11. Talkin' Chicken - As a vegetarian (not only because of many horror stories about KFC, but other reasons) I no longer speak chicken KFC to me lost all credibility when they decided to become an acronym in an attempt to appeace the fatty market who their health concious advisers said may be turned off by the word 'fried'.
12. MHTCSWISTCL - I really like this, in a kind of attitude of 'nothing was better than their first album, original lineup' kind of way, I still think this is rather cool tho.
13. Colonel Sanders Outtakes - Do you think the Colonel would kick the ass of Ronald Mcdonald in a street fight, I think the clown is a shady bastard who'd probably cheat or have a shield of children or something?
14. Chickenman - Great, in ways I can not describe
15. I am the Walrus - All I can say is this song is way before its time in so many ways, and is welcome on any compilation tape, You're either a beatles man or you like shit music(that was in some way inspired by the beatles) its as simple as that.
16. I get the neck of the chicken - Ace and a bit more Ace for good measuere
17. Psycho Chicken - cool
18.This Disk Will... - could have done with a 'bucarp!'

Ive got to say the Jazz on this disk made it a stand out compilation. When I first recieved it my mind immediately strayed to my record collection to find more Chicken and Egg songs. Its a wonderful concept for a compilation and I utterly enjoyed it. Its definately an 'All Day Breakfast' kind of cd. Kudos to Umfum for such an original and well executed CD which I enjoyed.

Overall swap rating - Double Ace with a side order of Ace.

Prince was a musical genius. Now he's just insane. Still makes great pancakes, though.

I watched the A&E Biography of Harlan Sanders. He was an ornery sumbitch. He'd rip off Ronald's shoes and stuff them up/down opposite orifices until they met somewhere near that clown's duodenum.

Glad you enjoyed the discs. Sorry I didn't make any progress toward answering the age-old question.
