I used to have knight and a viking action figures. They were huge and had horses and armor, which was pretty cool, but I never liked the smug look on the knight's face, so one day I cut him up, set his body parts on fire and floated him down a stream on a burning boat. The viking was very satisfied.

I also had a collection of very small plastic civil war army men. For social studies class we had to make a diarama, so I recreated Antietam by cutting up most of the figures and painting blood on them and their severed limbs and heads. I think there may have been one or two soldiers in the diarama who were intact.

Maybe I shouldn't be telling you all about this.

I am one of those bizarre people who leaves a room where a conversation is going on to talk on my mobile, and I even remember to turn it off when going into movies and live music and comedy shows, not to mention planes and hospitals.

I know, I am a freak.

The thing is, if they use these things in cinemas, I can just imagine the inconsiderate motherfuckers who like to talk loudly on their phones during the movie will instead turn into inconsiderate motherfuckers who spend half the movie talking to their friends about how weird it is that none of their mobiles work...

I think using the scrambly thing in a hospital would be a bad idea. I bet there are plenty of doctors getting calls on their cell phone to come up to surgery, or people quietly using cellular modems on their laptops while they do their work in the waiting room rather than at the office, as they try to focus on other things for the 5 hours their loved ones are in surgery... and a million other scenarios I can think of.

LadyJ, the problem is not that they disturb people in hospitals, but that the microwave emissions from mobile phones can seriously fuck around with life support equipment, especially (I have heard) humidicribs for premature babies.

Mircowave tranmissions run on carrier frequencies that modulate the signal within the available bandwidth to transmit the data. The problem is, this modulation can affect control circuitry in various devices in hospitals, airplanes, etc....

You'd be better off not using them in those places.

You can't (or rather, aren't supposed to) have your cell phone powered on anywhere within the hospital. I'm always paranoid about mine and double check it when I go to visit my wife. So the doctors aren't using them either.

Oddly enough, though, pagers seem to be just fine.
