Science isn't everything. Science is a method we use to try to understand and explain the world around us in a rational and consistent way.
Just because we use this method does not mean we have to reject the possibility of the existence of god(s) or of a 'spiritual' dimension to our universe.
However, the demands of most religions are incompatible with the scientific method as they involve the acceptance of (often quite outlandish) assumptions without offering testable evidence for their validity.
It's obviously ridiculous to class all religious people as 'simple-minded'. All that can be said is that they are, at least where faith is concerned, thinking irrationally. That's something in common with most of humanity for the majority of our lives.
