Actually, the mistake is mine. Homophobes themselves are not riddled with latent homosexuality. Upon further research it is actually BASHERS that studies strongly suggest harbor repressed homosexual tendencies.

Thus facilitating their need to manifest their hatred physically.

As for the hate issue, we're talking about beets, bunner. BEETS. Do you have a li'l beet inside you that you don't like? I doubt it. But perhaps you have tasted beets and did not like them. I sincerely doubt that you HATE beets to the point that you want to campaign for the worldwide destruction of them. As strongly as you may feel that they are not for you, you don't stand on corners and preach to others that beets are evil.

Now, what I WAS referring to was hatred. Not dislike, or even strong dislike. I am talking of hatred, the kind that compels people to propagate the same emotion in others. Why did Malcom X hate white people for a period? He had many reasons, one of which was the fact that his maternal grandfather was white.

If you hate black people, it can be whittled away to one simple thing: To you, they seem to exibit a characteristic that you have exibited yourself at some point. You are unhappy with that characteristic in yourself. It's very obvious that the kind of people who HATE are people that are obviously unhappy with themselves.

Shit aint always that simple, Mikey. It's nice to believe it is because it puts everything in a nice simple carton marked "HATERS AN WHY THEY HATE".

But...

It just ain't always that simple, yo.

Nor should it be.

So, Mikey, what do you hate?

: )

I still say Hogwash. There are certain behaviours that I wouldn't tolerate in a relationship, for example. I can honestly say I hate those characteristics in people. And I can guarantee you that I've never even thought to exhibit those behaviours, or attributed my unhappiness at any given time to my hatred of them.

If someone is really disturbed over a characteristic they exhibit themselves, they don't hate other people for being that way... they CHANGE it, for pete's sake.

I don't buy it, Mikey. Not in the homophobia example, and especially not in the racism example. This line of reasoning rings totally false to me. It completely ignores fear of the unknown and of the outsider. I cannot believe that hatreds that are so blatantly based on forms of xenophobia, alienation, and fear of the unknown and unfamiliar (hence racism in particular) can be rooted in identification of any sort. And what about the superiority complexes that accompany these hatreds? "I'm better than you because you are just like the part of me that I don't like?" How does that make sense? I suppose you could say that it's an example of cognitive dissociation to hate someone else for something that you find wrong in yourself, but I think that's stretching it. Take the case of a stereotypical racist Mississippian from the 1950s. If it's as simple as you make it out to be, then in this person's eyes, in order to hate black folk, he'd have to possess a latent desire to dance around with a bone in his nose, speak like bibbitybibbitybibbity, sacrifice babies to evil gods, eat his relatives when they die, and all the other things that the Mississippian from the 1950s would likely believe that those "negroes" would do if left to their own devices, and hate this desire in himself. I just can't see this.

The homophobia example, while you could make a case that what you're saying is a part of it, it's not that simple. It doesn't all "whittle down to this one point" of self-loathing. Once again, where is fear of the outside world taken into account in this? Where is the xenophobia? Let's take it a step down from what you're calling "gay bashing" to just "homophobia." Why is a man not wanting to have sex with other men any different from a woman not wanting to have sex with a particular man? Why is the latter an example of simple absence of sexual attraction and the former an example of some sort of deep seated psychological connundrum? Here's another one: Why is it a psychological connundrum if a man is sexually repulsed by other men, but it's a normal state of existence for him to be sexually repulsed by say, goats, pigs, tree stumps, or little children?

I will answer these philosophical conundrums in further detail when I return to work on Monday and have enough time to fuck off.

In the interim, please remind yourselves that I spoke of HATRED. I thought I had made that perfectly clear, but perhaps I have not.

Gay bashing and homophobia are different, and homophobia is different than a personal dislike.
