The Free Republic of Mother Earth is a large, safe nation, renowned for its absence of drug laws. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 26 million enjoy extensive civil rights and enjoy a level social equality free of the usual accompanying government corruption.

The government -- a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked, liberal, socially-minded morass -- juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, Education, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 44%, but much higher for the wealthy. A tiny private sector is dominated by the Arms Manufacturing industry.

Organ donation rates have hit a new low, the tenet of free speech is held dear, same-sex marriages are increasingly common, and Mother Earth's children are widely acknowledged as the most foul-mouthed in the region. Crime is totally unknown. Mother Earth's national animal is the Dominatrix, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the plankton.

I took the family up to the mountains for some sledding today. The little kids are loving it. Snow is falling to the point where chains are required to get there and we are in danger of seeing our 4-year old disappear into a drift. And what luck! We meet a friend who has his two young kids with him, so we all walk into the mountain woods with our sleds.

Back in the woods we know of a semi-private meadow with a hill. Very few people go there. But I see that someone was there first and made a snowman. Or at least partly made it. Or maybe someone knocked it over. At any rate I think, more luck! I'll set these up and the kids can decorate it. They're too young to make such a big snowman without a lot of help anyway. So while I'm pilling the sections together my wife and friend are off to one side helping the youngest kids sled and are talking. As I put the last piece on they start laughing.

I don't hear the joke so I keep fitting the pieces together. Now it stands 6'3" or so and the kids are playing around the base. I step back and realize that I've just built a massive snow penis complete with scrotum. It looks nothing like a snowman. Now I get the joke.

The kids didn't notice, so we left it. Luckily they lost interest and went to throw snow at each other instead.

Yeesh.
