The Underground Railroad Museum opened earlier this year. The problem is that very few artifacts from slavery survive. And with at least three similar museums opening, competition must be ferocious.
The piece de resistance, from Maysville, KY, is a "slave pen", a term which connotes an enclosed area, perhaps with troughs for food and water. In actuality, the "slave pen" is a two-story dwelling.
In fact, there's no evidence that it housed slaves. In hardscrabble Maysville, this could well have been the master's house. But no one would pay to see the master's house, unless it looked like Tara.
