The filter is just a dumb search and replace on a word list (which will be changing over time), it's nothing fancy. It defaults to on for new visitors to the site but can easily be toggled. It also currently defaults to off when you log in to your account (not sure if it'll stay that way or not). I'll be adding a warning to the register a new account page soon.
In case you're worried, I'm not planning to crack down on people using swears or anything. The whole point of this is so that I hopefully don't get complaints from parents and teachers anymore and people can use the site at work without tripping off adult content filters. I think this system is a pretty good compromise that helps more than it hurts.
With that in mind, here's a warning: if you're going to go out of your way to try and sneak swears through, I'm going to ban your account. I know it would be funny. Please resist.
