The insurgents dress just like civilians; when a group of Iraqis is approaching a group of soldiers and refuse to stop even after the soldiers raise their weapons and tell them to stop, REPEATEDLY, we have no choice but to assume they are the enemy.

You want to talk about cars shot up by convoys? Car bombs are the most prevalent IED over in Iraq. When a car starts coming too close to the convoy we level our weapons at it and wave it off. If they refuse to back off we fire a warning shot. If they are that retarded that they still won't back off or, as is so often the case, start getting even CLOSER, we have to assume the vehicle is dangerous and open fire.

It's easy to criticize something when you have no fucking clue what it's really like.

Yes, US soldiers have been responsible for the deaths of plenty of Iraqi citizens. It's a fucking WAR. Civilian deaths are un-fucking-avoidable. But I swear to God I hope you die slowly and painfully if you lump us in with the terrorists. We do everything we can to keep civilians out of danger; we don't TARGET THEM.

Jesus, man. I didn't mean to make you so angry, and sorry for it. But when I saw, in the beginning of this war, our bombs going off in Iraq, only to find two years later that the entire point of this war wasn't there, and still no exit strategy or any damned strategy at all, it makes me pissed. I wasn't blaming you soldiers, because it's obvious that you GET orders, not MAKE them.

Sorry I'm too fucking young to join the military. But it's not like I would anyway. You can call me anti-American all you want. I feel bad for anyone who volunteered to fight in a war where we are so unsure of our enemy that we shoot anything that comes too close. I want all of you home, not fighting something unbeatable.

How many of the groups of Iraqis that approach you end up having arms on them? Is it not possible that the scared civilians, who do not speak English, have experienced the same hell as you, just want some fucking help?

Of course you aren't terrorists. But it bothers me that any civilian death is labeled "collateral damage." The killing needs to stop on both sides. It's obvious that the war on terror is failing. The war in Iraq, (completely unrelated to the war on terror... until it gave Al Qaeda a new recruiting method) has only served to exacerbate our situation.

I'll stop "spouting my propaganda" once our government does, once they stop telling us that the war is working despite the continuous deaths on both sides, and that a terrorist attack in London is a sign of success. Maybe.

I prefer to ask, "why," instead of calling for blood. You can't cure a disease until you diagnose it. You may not target civilians, but our leadership shows and INCREDIBLE disregard for humanity when our fucking Attorney General refers to the Geneva Conventions as, "quaint." If you really do have regard for human life, this should worry you greatly.

If you have a problem with the war you need to address the powers that be. I can't speak for the troops but I assume that almost every troop would love to come home if it were up to them. Many troops, a few my friends, joined the military before this war escalated or even started. Many had hopes to earn money to support college aspirations or whatever future endeavors they had, never imagining that they would end up in their current situation. I have no answers to the problems but the bottom line is that you must always support our troops.

I support the soldiers in that I very much hope they come home alive and well. HCRoyall seemed to counter me with an "it's okay because civilians die in every war" attitude.

While I do generally consider myself someone who "supports the troops", I've always been a bit reluctant to buy into the line of thinking that we must blindly support our military simply because its our military. I support the individuals who signed up because they wanted a way to lift themselves into a better position in life.

But I don't support the individuals who are there because they want to kill or "blow stuff up" - I cannot support troops like the ones that tossed two innocent Iraqis into a river which resulted in the death of one of them, just a young teenager.

I don't support troops who take the prisoner's most sacred beliefs to mock and trash them, blaring pornography to force them to feel what they believe to be sinful feelings, and taking their holy book to the toilet to piss on.

I really hope that these acts are only representative of a very small fraction of our military. Well-rounded soldiers like HCRoyall do not deserve to be surrounded by these things.

Excuse me? I never said it was okay. It is not now, nor will it ever be, okay. My point is that you're assigning unfair blame on us for situations we can't help.

You asked how many actually have weapons? Quite a damn bit. And before you start spouting off about how they don't know English, I'm going to say again for you to STFU until you learn a little more. We are taught BEFORE WE EVEN FLY OVER THERE how to say "Stop!" and "Don't come any closer!" in the local dialects.

We shout that at them a couple of times. If they keep coming, we raise our weapons. If the sight of multiple assault rifles being leveled at them doesn't make them stop, we fire a warning shot to let them know we mean business. There aren't that many civilians who are that fucking stupid as to keep coming after that. We don't kill civilians indiscriminately. We don't kill them at all unless it's by accident or they lead us to believe they are a threat.

I don't care that you don't want to join the military. If I could turn back time I wouldn't have joined either. I joined the National Guard for the college money, before all this bullshit started.

The bombings in London pissed me off because it doesn't make sense. What did those people ever do to deserve such violence? Nothing. That's right, NOTHING. Say what you want about the military, say what you want about the atrocites of the war.

Killing innocent people just because you don't like their government? It's insane. I have Muslim friends, and I've asked them about it. What the terrorists are doing is wrong, no matter how hard they try to hide behind Islamic Law. Jihad is only authorized when the Holy Land is under direct assault or controlled by enemy forces, with 'Holy Land' being defined as Isreal/Palestine and much of Saudi Arabia, to Include Mecca and Medina. (I think the second city is right; correct me if I'm wrong, please.)

War is inevitable, but it should be kept to to battlefield. The job of myself and my comrades is to fight battles so that the rest of you don't have to. I just can't understand how someone could have so little respect for life as to kill and maim people who pose no threat to you at all.

I agree with most of what cpausti said. HC, I don't think he's pointing the finger directly at you or the majority of the troops over there as targeting innocent citizens. In fact, he called you a "well-rounded soldier" in a previous post. Unfortunately, when you have assholes like Lynndie England, Charles Graner, etc. pulling their little stunts at Abu Ghraib, that takes away from the good things that the decent and humane soldiers do. Sad to say, but it really does reflect badly on the military as a whole.

Iraq will never ever be even remotely democratic like us unless we are there forever, holding their hand and guiding them. Extremist leaders hate America and everything it stands for...and they aren't just going to give up and accept whatever gov't we've installed there. We are in way over our heads in Iraq and I'm afraid that it won't ever get any better. Who's to say that this new gov't won't be overthrown by a bunch of psycho extremists the minute we leave Iraq?

There's no denying that anti-Americanism is rampant in the Middle East. Our invasion of Iraq isn't going to spread democracy throughout the area and turn everyone on to our way of life, anyone who believes that is delusional. We're already hated, and nothing is going to change that...if anything, it stokes the fire of hatred towards us because we are viewed as occupiers.

There isn't. But for you to say that the Iraqi government we are protecting right now will never be even remotely democratic only shows you too are ignorant of the situation. We are staying until the new government can police itself effectively and defend itself in the event that such an uprising does happen.
