Joshua, Joshua, Joshua....I never said either were any less of a band due to there "Classification". Please dont make it sound that way. I love both bands. But you cant argue that Rancids newest album is better than stuff prior to their MTV Apperances. And due to the fact that Ramones were in the "Golden Era" of punk, they(By default.) should be concidered as "Classic" punk. Pop's definition is Popular. Since the ramones are quite popular, I guess they could be classified there. But if you are using the term "Pop" in the since of 4 little teens that sing about breakup's and how much their heart aches, then you are quite wrong. Thats why I felt the need to comment about you putting The Ramones and Simple Plan together. Cause simple plan are 4 kids singing about heartbreak, and Ramones, if considered "pop", should only be considered by the fact that they are popular band in there genre.

Bubblegum Punk did you mean?

That's the only one I've heard of. I think it's just slang or something.

Although I refuse to to classify Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Blink 182 and the like in thier rightful genre "Mall Punk"

There's no need to get so diverse.

Which brings me to my next statement:

STOP GETTING MAD AT ME I DIDN'T MAKE UP THE GENRES!

But I do use "electroclash" because the definition for it suggests a mixture of indie, electronica and a little pop. It's pretty much a normal indie band with synth and stuff.

I also don't think coldplay is britpop. All the stuff I have by them with synth or something sounds like The Faint, and all the stuff without synth sounds like Sorry About Dresden or The Good Life, and those are all indie bands. Yes, I know Coldplay isn't on an indie label, but it's getting to the point where indie, since all indie music tends to have the same style, is becoming a genre that's about the music, not about how it's produced.

And I don't use dancecore.

I think it's stupid.

It matters not.

And Ewwwww, think back.

WAAAAAAAYYY BACK.

Back to when The Ramones weren't classical.

Now, if the "Alternative" genre was as diverse back then as it is today, what do you think The Ramones would be under?

Pop Punk.

That's what they were back when they were a band. The reason they weren't pop punk is because there WAS no pop punk, but now that there is, they can be called it, and you would be correct in saying so.

Blitzkreig Pop.

Punk groups should be classified based on how much rancid shit any one of their members would inject into his arm. Could any of nowaday's pussy fake punk bands match even The Ramones?

And Rod Stewart, coincidentally, also did a cover of "The First Cut is the Deepest."

Joshw try listening to some more britpop before you decide what it is... muse, oasis, radiohead, placebo and coldplay all fall under britpop though they sound different... as Yes, Pink Floyd and King Crimson fall under Prog though they have very different tones. Bunner's point is you don't need to subjecate everything based on a title.

This thread reminds me of DragonXero's "Mallcore" thread from back in the day. Go read that thread for some great flaming, and an excellent quote from Brad:

After that thread I wrote a series of comics to blow off steam, but never announced them (this was before there were lists of recent comics on the front page) for fear of fanning the flames. So I'll retroactively announce them now in response to this thread. They starred Jon from Goats as a guy called "The Compartmentalist" and Indy Rock Pete as a touchy fan not of indie rock but of various kinds of metal. I'm particularly fond of this one, which draws on DX quotes from the original thread. In fact, these Compartmentalist strips make up the bulk of what could be considered a theme in my work at the time, encompassing most of my strips from 07 Dec 2001 to 31 Jan 2002. Go read them all so I don't have to spend more time now writing an actual post on my opinions of genremongering.

Short version: genres aren't good for anything besides helping you find the right section of the record store. Stop caring about them and start listening to music you like. Also, participate in the CD swaps so you can surprise yourself by liking music you never expected to.

Here's what I was groovin to this summer:

1) Dimitri from Paris--Sacre Francais. I find Dimitri otherwise boring, but the disc this song is on is great from start to finish.

2) Fantastic Plastic Machine--Theme of Luxury. When I have my own TV show, this will be the theme song.

3) Amon Tobin--Verbal. This song is so frenetic, I can't help but get jittery and move when I hear it.

4) Velvet Underground--I'll Be Your Mirror. I've noticed the Velvets and John Cale popping up on other SC user soundtracks. I've been a fan of theirs for years, but this particular song made a comeback in my brain this year and I listened to it quite a bit.

5) Jonathan Richman--Yo Tengo Una Novia. I see this guy every time he comes to town. He's incredible, playing everything from 50's rock to flamenco, or a capella. He sings in English, French, and in this case, in Spanish. (When I sing this song, though, I change it to Yo Tengo Un Novio)

6) Tom Tom Club--Genius of Love. This has to be the most sampled song of all-time. I figure why listen to the same breaks played over and over...the original is such a beautiful song.

7) Chemical Brothers--Come With Us. The Chemical Brothers have been around so long, people who like house music tend to bash them as boring or unoriginal...I still love them and this song gets me jumping every time.

8) Gil Scott Heron--Ain't No Such Thing As Superman. If all you've heard of GSH is "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" or "Whitey On The Moon," listen to this and be surprised.

9) Soul Coughing--Buddha Rhubarb Butter. This might be my favorite band of all time. Doughty's solo work hasn't lived up to anything Soul Coughing did IMHO. I listened to this song a lot because I found it online looking for rare or unreleased tracks I hadn't heard already.

10) Marshall Crenshaw--Someday Someway. I admit it, I can also be a sucker for a perfectly written pop song.

Three propositions:

1. Genre labels are not useless. They are, however, useless when it comes to classifying different types of "rock music," (as opposed to "rock 'n' roll," which has been a traditional genre like bluegrass for decades now). That's because rock music is either eclectic or tasteless, all-embracing or vulgar-- your choice of terms depending on your stakes in the culture wars. It's mix 'n' match, a hodgepodge, a potpourri, a miscellany, a mishmash, an assortment, a grab bag.

You can identify strains of genre and style running through a particular song or record, but it's futile to stick whole bands and groups of bands in made-up categories from which they are instantly seen to depart.

2. "Alternative" and "indie" are not "genre" or "style" terms. They are market terms only: "independent" of major record labels; "alternative" to the industry sales charts (although the industry in its infinite perversity has given us "alternative charts," a natural oxymoron). I defy anyone to identify a genre or style associated with these terms.

3. Fact is, all you bastards are listening to commercial music, or music that is trying to become commercial, unless you really are spending your time in garages and coffeehouses and hobo camps.
