I disagree. Stripping a people of their humanity has repercussions that echo down through the generations. Furthermore, it isn't even that many generations, or any, in fact. Hell, when I was in high school in the early-mid 80s, our schools were still so segregated that we got forced busing. Cue interracial violence. Those black persons experienced apartheid directly and are still alive and right in the middle of their earning and childrearing years. This is not ancient history.

Lastly, if the history of black folks in America doesn't explain their current lot as a group, then what does? Some kind of innate inferiority? I think it has much to do with slavery and Jim Crow-- not a wild guess, since these have been the crucial facts of life in black history.

But the same Deuteronomy has God saying that he shall punish children for the sins of the fathers, even to the third or fourth generation. In secular terms, the consequences of evil echo down through the generations. Which is what I said.

And I wasn't suggesting that white folks be punished, but that "get over it" is easy to say and not very helpful.

thats the entire mistake though. they didn't strip a 'people' of their humanity. one group had an advantage over another and exploited it. identifying being exploited with black skin is the the way many black people victimize themself
