Speaking of the UN, while the US government is happily spending hundreds of billions (trillions?) on its military activities, maybe it could spare the UN a billion. That's what it owes in UN membership fees, and its failure to pay has been the main cause of the UN's current financial crisis.

But Bush did promise a tax rebate during his campaign to get elected. And he delivered on his promise. Yes sir, every adult in the country got a whole $300 or so.

The people who sold their votes for that paultry sum make me sick.

The US should have paid it's UN dues a LONG time ago. But I think the Bush administration probably wouldn't mind seeing the UN go away. Those nitwits think the US can actually run the world, and do it all alone. They have managed to antagonize every US ally, except perhaps Israel & the UK.

One thing I hope those who live in other countries realize is that the citizens of the US don't want to start another damn war. But we have no say in the matter. Bush and Cheney have both already said they do not need the approval of the congress to attack Iraq. Attorney General John Ashcroft (with Bush administration blessings) has been limiting constitutional protections of citizens.

So the executive branch is cutting into areas constitutionally reserved for the legislative branch and the judicial branch.

The countdown to fascism has begun.

As you may know, the US has a boatload of Congressional elections coming up in a few months. In my neck of the woods, we have primary elections in a week and a half to determine whom each of the major parties will put up. In my district, two Democrats (including the current representative) are vieing for their nomination, and four Republicans for theirs.

As a public service, and since we haven't heard of most of these individuals, the local weekly paper published a voter's guide to this and other races. This included thumbnails of each of the six, and their answers to questions of local, national or international importance. One of those questions was as follows:

What should the United States do to work toward peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians?

Five of the six gave mainstream answers. The sixth, however, rattled off this gem:

I don't know. This will be the first time I vote as a resident of Maryland. But I do live in Montgomery County. But I'm registered Independent, so I won't get to vote until November anyway.

Most of the county is in the 8th, as I was till this year's gerrymander. Southeast Montgomery is in the 4th, and the northern tip in the 6th.
