They scrapped the idea a long time ago and recently reconsidered it. Basically no one wants to strap a bunch of devastating weapons to a rocket and fire it into space. This is why we don't send nuclear waste to the sun. An atmospheric explosion would be devestating to life on earth. Accidently exploding that many hyrodgen bombs in low orbit would at the very least act as a hemispherical EMP bomb, and at worse kill millions or billions. Making the bombs in space might be worth trying though.

No, for once, you fuck, I know what I'm talking about. They were nuclear fission bombs, similar to the ones we use to scare other countries. The plan was to use the materials from our current nuclear weapons supply to create a propulsion system. Why in the fuck would scientists who can't figure out how to create a controlled fusion reactor want to try building bombs with the same reaction? It wasn't some wild idea that was going to happen in the year 2021, it was an idea for the near future.

It was scrapped for obvious reasons, as you said, however.

Ok I'll stop being a jerk for one post. Some projects talked about using either kind of bombs. In any event the reason they scraped the idea was the nuclear test band treaties, not for concern about human well being.

They didn't even stop atmospheric testing after project Starfish (an atmospheric, high alititude nuclear burst) caused an EMP blast that shut down electronics in Hawaii..some 600-800 miles away. It think it was a botched rocket launch with an enourmous payload on the end that finally made the U.S. realize testing weapons that can wipe out cities over and over again might be bad.
