In times of strife, I oft-times turn to the Stripcreations chat, where, oft-times, the talk turns to booze. "Why is there no current thread for such things?" I've thought to myself at some of these times. WELL NOW THERE IS.

See? It's right here.

As a budding beer afficianado, I feel the need/desire for such things.

Talk about any alcohol here, not just beer. Hey, turn this into a mead home-brewing club, compare hilarious Skye vodka experiences, or just plain post random comments while especially toasted. Who knows? Even spin-off threads are possible!!!!lol

So, I'll start.
-----------------------------------------------------
This is my beer glass.

I got it as a birthday gift from the friend that got me into craft beers, and I must say that it is indeed fantastic. Every beer I've dranken since I got the glass I have dranken from the glass. Nice to just read that warning now.
When perusing for the picture above, I discovered that Stone has several more "specialty" glasses, as well as some damn handsome pint glasses, which I may have to purchase when $$$ permits.
I've gotta say, Stone is a fantastic brewery, and I would recommend anyone getting into beer to try ANYTHING Stone makes. Anyone already into beer is mostly likely intimately familiar with this great, solid brewery.

This, I have dubbed my "signature" beer one obvious reason.

As far as the actual beer goes, I really do like it, which I am glad for. It's a Belgian style "quadrupel" ale, and quite tasty and quite strong. For the sake of shortening this post, I won't do a full review, however I would recommend this beer to anyone who thinks they would like a light-colored, but very strong and malty beer. Also, follow the link from that picture to a really good beer rating site.
Also, when looking for that picture I found that Avery (the brewery of The Reverend), makes a shirt for The Reverend that I simply must have, once again when $$$ permits.
-----------------------------------------------------

So anyway, get crackin'! There's no good reason with all of you drunkards out there that this thread shouldn't become entertaining to the point of stickyingableness.

I'm gonna demand that Stone Stout be introduced to the pub i work in. Why? Well, i like pouring pints of Guiness because writing a shamrock on the top of it looks cool. With a Russian one, i'd do a hammer and sickle :D

Who did what now in '89?

Stone is indeed awesome. I'm lucky to live in San Diego, where it is made, so there are plenty of taps serving it around town. Here's me in Czech Republic in July wearing a Double Bastard cycling jersey.

I'm not the beer drinker I used to be (I've switched to wine), but when I'm out and I'm drinking beer, it's always Stone if it's available.

I haven't had much wine, but I do believe I enjoy reds better. I'm currently going through all varieties of Avia red wines. Check your grocery store. They taste terrible and cost 4 dollars.

I drink them out of plastic Halloween-themed goblets.

That's what I would love to drink all the time. Big Rock Grasshopper Wheat Ale, brewed in Alberta.

However, hardly any bars here in Saskatchewan serve it, so I'm usually drinking
1)Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale (brewed in the Maritimes)

2)Molson Canadian (which is typically a last resort)

3) MGD (but usually only at my friends house because that's all that he drinks...)

4) Labatt Blue (again, a last resort)

5) Kokanee (which is brewed in BC, and the very last of last resorts. As in, I'll drink it if its 2.25 a bottle)

The best part of Kokanee is on every bottle there's a yedi somewhere in the mountain. When you and a bunch of your friends are already hammered off the stuff, finding the yedi is almost as amusing as falling down stairs.

I used to despise anything Miller...but after getting into really intense beers, watery shit beers really have no shocking effect on the palate. Therefore, I'm almost less of a beer snob now that I know that I kind of knowing what I'm doing with beer.

That said, there are some okay cheap beers. PBR is way better than Budweiser, and less cashola. Same with High Life. Why people ever drink Bud other than when there's nothing else is a mystery to me.

I like Widmer and Henry.

My favorite bar to go to for getting/trying out beer is the Horsebrass. Right next door is the Belmont Station which is loaded with micros.

And, excuse me for being a heathen, but Rock Bottom has a tasty wheat. And they got funky seasonals, like their current winter one which is apple-y and hoppy and effervescent.

Well all lager tastes pretty much the same to me. They have different shades of flavour, but only in the same way that there are different degrees of murder.

Having said that, San Miguel is by far the best lager in my opinion.

As for stout, i'm generally a Guinness drinker as theres usually very little else on offer except for possibly Murphy's. I don't drink bitter unless i'm in a pub where they have a selection of weird ones, in which case i'll probably go through them all if im in the mood :D

To be honest, theres very few beers that are disgusting, and so i don't understand when people get all upset if they can't get their favourite beer at a pub. I'll give you an example: I work in a pub which sells four of the usual lagers (Carling, Coors, Grolsch and Kronenbourg) on draft, along with Guinness, Strongbow, John Smith's Smooth and Worthington Creamflow. We also have three cask beers, two of which are real ales (Tetley's and Bass) with the other one being John Smith's Cask. Now, sometimes we don't have any of the cask beers on, usually because the barrells have recently run out and we're waiting the new ones to ferment. During this period, i'll get some customers coming into the pub and frowning at me.
"Have yer got norr propa beers on?"
"No, sorry mate, not for the next few hours anyway"
"Oh..."
...and they walk off. They just walk off. They don't go "oh OK then, i'll have a pint of Smooth or Creamflow, they just walk off, as if they're too good to drink anything that isn't a cask beer.

I think thats bullshit. The 'Beer Pedant' is one of the saddest sights in Britain.

wha, whu... where am i?

Is it true that American lagers are usually about 2% proof? We had an American guy in the pub the other day who wanted to photograph a bottle of Budweiser because it said '5% proof' on the side.

Meh

attitudechicka

I don't think most of the American beers print their proof on the side. I'm quite sure Budwieser here is 5% proof or more (like 5.6% max), but then again, I live in St. Louis.

DragonXero
December 20, 2005 2:54 PM

Chicka's right. The well-known US lagers are all around 5.6%. There are of course malt liquors which are higher proof. Guinness in the US, however, is around 3%. I don't know if that's the same in Europe

Chicka's guess on why the American dude was taking a picture of the Budweiser is probably a good one. Alcohol content isn't a big selling point for the major lagers. On the other hand, malt liquors generally give a percentage and there are many microbrews that prominently advertise their content. Piraat ale proudly displays the fact that it's something like 13.5% alcohol.

I drink imported stuff and weird special brews because I drink for the experience, not to get drunk. I like drinking a Corona after coming home from work in the summer. I like Having a couple of bacardis while I hang out with my friends Saturday night. I like trying mixed drinks when I'm out at a bar with friends and somebody else is driving. But American mass-produced beers all taste like piss to me. I love a good guinness, but the problem is finding one. There was an Irish pub in my town that managed to get good guinness, but it closed down. So sad...

There are about a million really good breweries in America, it's just not the norm to have the shit available most places. Americans in general just don't mess with things they haven't had before. Why? I think our culture promotes homogenization, plus anything "fancy" is for fags.
Don't know. I've always been a curious person, and I don't understand people that aren't driven, or at least interested, to try new things. Especially when as harmless (relatively speaking) and potentially enjoyable as food and drink. What do you have to lose? "Oh, this tastes like shit. I guess I won't eat/drink this again." And?

Anyway. I know/have had very few import beers. Just the readily available ones. I've had a few Scottish beers recently, which were decent.
- Belhaven's import: I really liked this when I started getting into beer...for about two drinkings. Now it just tastes too metallic for me.
- Something-ioch Heather Ale: Pretty good, I'd drink it again. Flowery (obviously) and light.
- Something Elderberry Black Ale: This beer is PITCH black. I mean darker than imperial stouts, NO light shows through. However, it is suprisingly clean drinking. Almost too clean. I liked the flavor, don't get me wrong on that...I just wish there was more of it.

Anyway. I'm up for Prague, of course...(everybody now!) IF $$$ PERMITS
