What the heck is Gonzo? Pt. 1 by clark67211

Hey Trevor, Let me ask you a question. When you were a kid, did you ever watch The Muppet Show?
Of corse I did. Everyone our age watched those goofy over-sized puppets when they were growing up. What? You think black kids didn't watch the Muppets?
What? No, that's not what I meant. I didn't mean . . .
Oh relax. I'm just fuckin' messin' with you. Sure I watched the Muppet Show. Why?
Well, I was thinking about it earlier today and, well, what the heck was Gonzo?
Gonzo? Well he was a little blue, ummm, he had a big nose, and wasn't he like a lizzard or something. Maybe a lizzard Barbara Streisand?

So back to the Gonzo thing. What bothers me is that Kermit was a frog, Ms. Piggy was a Pig, and Fonzie was a bear. Why is Gonzo some indistinguishable animal?
Well, he always hung out with rats. Maybe he is some sort of blue mutant rat or something? Or how about some sort of bird?
No then he would have feather, not fur. Are there even any animals in nature with blur fur?
You mean other that Beast from the X-Men?
Yes, other than the Beast from the X-Men. Jeez.
Well excuse me. Hey, what about Nightcrawler?

Let's be serious about this Gonzo thing. The Muppet show had a nice little thing going with the animal theme. Why did they throw in Gonzo? Just to mess with little kids heads?
Well, what about Grover?
What?
Grover. He was another blue Muppet that didn't look like any animal. Wouldn't he fall into the same category?
Damn that Sesame Street. Now I am never gonna be able to sleep tonight.
I guess it would be a bad Idea to mention Elmo at this point.

This is a cool site. This scene is from a screenplay I wrote. What to you think?

Maybe if very talented actors, skilled in the arts of inflection and gesticulation, were to read that snippet of your screenplay, it would be funny.  But I doubt it.  As it is, the last Muppets from Space was funnier than those comics, although perhaps not as funny as contracting terminal cancer.

As a very talented actor, skilled in the arts of whatever the hell not_scyess mentioned, and a playwright, I can clearly find a couple issues with the dialogue.

Of corse I did. Everyone our age watched those goofy over-sized puppets when they were growing up. What? You think black kids didn't watch the Muppets?

Now right here is where I run into two problems with snappy conversation (a number one objective for screenwriters). First, you stretch out the description of the muppets to include "those goofy over-sized puppets" when you could probably just substitute it with "The Muppet Show" or "The Muppets." Otherwise it sounds a bit unnatural.

Secondly, "You think black kids didn't watch the muppets?" I have no idea what context this is coming from, but unless they have some kind of running gag between them this sort of canned race joke should probably be left out entirely. Keep these two things in mind when writing for an audience. You want it to sound natural.

Also, lizard is spelled with one Z.

The X-Men joke is too soft. It's like a 'whoops, I guess I shouldn't leave my bike in the rain' into a 'ha, ha, daddy has cake on his face.' Try to punch up your humor so that it's more consistant, because audiences don't seem to take well to dry spots in the script.

And ending a sentence with the word Jeez is something I have a personal vendetta against. It's like saying "God Damn" but with more 50's hairstyles.

The joke seemed like it would almost have made it at the end, except that it just plain didn't connect in time. Again, try to squeeze unnecessary wording out of the script.

Of course, what do I know? I'm an idiot.

Also, it's Fozzie. Fozzie and Fonzie are two completely different things. Chief among them being that Fonzie was from
Happy Days.

Hey there. Thanks for the constructive critisism, from some at least. Sorry about the typos, but I didn't realize I would not have the ability to edit the strips when I first posted them. I would have checked over them more closely, and while I may donate soon, I want to check out the site for a few more days before I do so.

I agree these scenes can come off a bit out of context (i.e. the "black kids don't watch the Muppets" joke). In the script is was a running gag between the characters. I agree it doesn't really come off in this format, but it is a new type of writing for me. I really just grabbed a scene from an old unpublished script to mess with. I tried to add a bit of a punchline to the end of each 3-panel strip, because the format demands it. I may try another soon, but I need to look at a few more of the stips others post, to get a feel for the site.

P.S. And next time I will be sure to proofread the strip before posting.

ok i read them.

1) didn't find em funny, which is kinda sad cuz i'm fairly buzzed right now, everything should be funny....

2) your ,i guess you might call it dialogue progression, is very good. it is the punchlines that are your enemy.

3) disregard your spelling errors- we get it, its okay

4) reach deep and get nasty, sometimes its the only way. sometimes.
