Everclear - Local God - This song reminds me of the simplicity of youth. It was on the 'Romeo & Juliet' soundtrack, and it seriously brings me back to watching that movie with my girlfriends, sobbing our eyes out and trying to interpret Shakespeare

Muse - Supermassive Black Hole - Last summer, I was working for a chain of cafe/bakery type kiosks that are mostly in malls and the like. They had lost their owner/operator, so a guy from head office was out looking after the place and hiring all new staff. He was definitely one of the coolest bosses I've ever worked for, especially a head office one. Anyway, we bonded over Muse and before he took off after selling the place, he burned me the newest Muse CD as a gift.

Beastie Boys - Fight for Your Right - A good friend of mine always "sings" Beastie Boys whenever we go karaoke-ing.

Faith No More - Epic - Rock Band. 'Nuff said.

Jully Black - Seven Day Fool - This woman is so cool. I saw her being interviewed and she was so down to earth, it made me want to listen to her music. Then I did, and I fell in love with it. And no, she's not like Amy Winehouse, pasty white crack-whore with an oddly deep jazz voice. This woman is originally from Jamaica and moved to Toronto when she was young.

The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon - A friend of mine burned me a CD with this song on it, and it just makes me want to belt out the lyrics. I choose not to sometimes, because not everyone needs to hear that, but when I'm alone in the car...

Elliot Smith - Miss Misery - It's Elliot Smith! How could you not want something by him on a CD?!

Jack Johnson - If I Had Eyes - I started liking his music when 'In Between Dreams' came out, however I soon tired of the CD when we kept playing it over and over and over again (I worked at a music store at this point). So when this new album came out, I was wary, but I was very happy with the results.

Ashley MacIsaac - Sophia's Pipes - I used to be a highland dancer, so any fiddle/bagpipe music is right up my alley. That, and I've met Ashley MacIsaac at a ceilidh, at a highland games, in Canada, about 10 years ago when he was still hugely popular.

Coheed & Cambria - Welcome Home - A) Rock Band B) Sweet Jesus, I loves me some gritty punk-ish-emo-ish-rock-ish music. This is also a fantastic song to jog/run to

The Trews - Hold Me In Your Arms - A lot harder than their last CD, I was thoroughly impressed and in heart with this song. (Not Ready to Go was their big single off the last CD). Oh, and Canadian!

Papa Roach - To Be Loved - I was working at a restaurant that let us listen to whatever we wanted when working in the prep area. Most of the kitchen staff was male, and I appreciated their taste in harder music. So I spent about 6 hours looking for music that would appease them, and this little gem rolled out. I purchased it on iTunes and said that the quality was kind of crappy (it is, and its not something I would expect from iTunes). They apologised and gave me a song credit. Yay!

Alexisonfiire - Crisis - I fucking love these guys. I didn't used to. When they first came out, I hated the entire genre of screamo. However, after a few listens I came to really enjoy it (Also heart Billy Talent). Also, Canadian!

Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor - My boyfriend turned me on to this band, and I haven't looked back since. I was also going to try to make this swap mix all songs with the word 'Dance' in it, but I didn't get very far.

The Faint - Paranoiattack - Whilst working at a music store years ago, we would put on whatever music we felt like while closing. One of the guys put a cd by this band on, and I was blown away by their awesomeness.

Jully Black - Until I Stay (Remix) - Gratuitous remix part. I had to have something to go with the next song, or it would seem really out of place.

Nelly Furtado - Do It - Yes, I know. All the controversy about her doing a hip-hop album after her previous were all indie/alt rock. Don't care. It makes me want to groove, and that's the intention.

Placebo - Running Up that Hill - I have fucking loved Placebo ever since I saw Cruel Intentions when I was like 13. Oh, and also Big Shiny Tunes 2 (collaboration from a Candian music company). Oh, and also the whole alt-rock phase of the mid nineties. Blur's 'Song 2' anyone? As well, I loved the OC, and on one of their better episodes, this song was playing for a big part of it. Then a band called Santa Esmerelda did a cover of it, and it made me feel bad and evil things hearing it done by another band.

Love this track. Muse are a bit patchy for me, but this is among the awesome tracks.

I don't like celtic music. I find it twee. I get subjected to it in pubs here in Northern Ireland all the time. It sucks. This, on the other hand... Also sucks. Sorry.

Coheed & Cambria - Welcome Home

I am a huge fan of these guys, in fact they're also on my mix. Different song though. Kitty, if Welcome Home is the only track of theirs you know, or even just that album, you're in for a whole lot of awesome when you get more. Brilliant stuff, and a great track to include.

Liked this quite a lot. Great riffery, great vocals.

Papa Roach - To Be Loved

What I've heard of Papa Roach up to this point I haven't liked, too angsty, but I'm a sucker for this kind of spiky, tuneful rock. Good stuff.

Alexis on Fire - Crisis

I'm also a big fan of AoF. Me, Fuj and Jes saw them in Belfast the last time they were here, and they rocked. The bar was about 10 feet away from the stage. Bonus. How amazing is that album, too?

Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor

These guys can fuck right off. They were all over everything for a few months in the UK. Thankfully they've receded into the background somewhat. I hate 'Accent Rock' as I have dubbed it.

The Faint - Paranoiattack

This would have been better without the vocals for me, it's a great Daft Punk-esque tune, and I don't think the singer fits, to be honest.

Juily Black - Until I Stay (Remix)

I thought this was Christina Agorilla when I heard it, and immediately knew I would hate it. The groovery changed my mind, and have grown to really like it.

Nelly Furtado - Do It

Sounded like High School Musical or something. Did not like.

Placebo - Running Up that Hill

Fine enough, I suppose, but Brian Molko has always sounded to whiny for my taste.

In all, I really enjoyed this. It truly picked up for me about half way through. A couple of misfires, I though, but generally good stuff, thanks!

Everclear - Local God - Chalk it up to hyperactivity, but I’ve almost always needed a lot going on in a rock song to really get me into it. This is a little bit stilted, favoring a steady beat over any kind of crescendo, which I patiently waited for until about 2 minutes in. The lyrics are interesting, but the track didn’t click with me as much as I would have liked.

Muse - Supermassive Black Hole - Oh yeah. This track is awesome. It’s got sweet lyrics that couple with it’s sound and steady electronics for that really dirty feeling you only hear once every blue moon. I approve.

Beastie Boys - Fight for Your Right - A classic. Haven’t heard it in a couple years, so this was appreciated.

Faith No More - Epic - Nice parallel. I really like this song, for the same general reasons I like songs. Good lyrics, cool sound, good track.

Jully Black - Seven Day Fool - Now, I don’t purport to know what encompasses a genre of music, but I do believe I hear me some

Motown. That alone is a good mark, but the song itself is an instant classic (at least with me). Totally into this.

The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon - Huge fan of the Kinks. This particular track is amazing, for both the quality of the lyrics and the wonderfully dated (but still awesome) sound I have come to respect the Kinks for. A personal favorite.

Elliot Smith - Miss Misery - Sadly, I wasn’t able to get into this. The basic sound stagnates after a while, and the lyrics were not particularly inspiring to me. Then again, really slow songs have to be pretty epic to actually get my positive attention.

Jack Johnson - If I Had Eyes - Well now I know where John Meyer gets his inspiration (or heavy rip offs) from. A wonderful song, which made me feel good listening to it. Definitely going into my main rotation.

Ashley MacIsaac - Sophia's Pipes - Another epic track, I was taken totally by surprise on this one. I’ve always been a big fan of a)Instrumental music and b)Unconventional (I.e. non-standardized American pop crap) sounds. The music is lovely (yes, lovely) and I appreciate the pseudo-rock feel mixed with the bagpipes. Also now on my main rotation.

Coheed & Cambria - Welcome Home - I had a friend back in high school who was seriously into Coheed & Cambria (she eve read the comic books). As a result of my lack of respect for her I never even attempted to check them out, though I heard this track several times in the past. Now that I go back and hear it again, it seems like a pretty standard semi-emo rock song. Nothing to write home about, but I certainly don’t hate it now that the context of my musical relationship with C&C has changed.

The Trews - Hold Me In Your Arms - Gonna be honest, this is just too harsh for me. The heavy emphasis on percussion decimated my head, and while I wanted to like it I just can’t stand multiple playthroughs. Humpenstein would love this track.

Papa Roach - To Be Loved - I was on the fence about this song until it kicked into high gear. The whole package pumps me up, and is especially effective when I drive places with people who like rocking out in a shitty old car. It is man song, puts hair on chest!

Alexisonfiire - Crisis - Jesus tapdancing christ. I am not metal enough to handle this. I give up. I surrender. Please, don’t hurt me.

Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor - The Arctic Monkeys are awesome. I love all their music, including this track (though I have always favored Fluorescent Adolescent for what should now be obvious reasons).

The Faint - Paranoiattack - Electronica? On MY Ghetto Barricade? It’s more likely than you think. One of the things I’ve always appreciated about electronica are the beats, and the fact that it’s really good music to dance to. This track doesn’t disappoint, as it was subjected to multiple tests among the roommates (they were informed later).

Jully Black - Until I Stay (Remix) - Dance music is another genre I just don’t like. That being said, I like this track. A lot. It’s almost too catchy, making me unable to hate it. Jully Black has won me over.

Nelly Furtado - Do It - See the first sentence from the last track’s review.

Placebo - Running Up that Hill - “Bass to the max” seems to be this song’s tagline, which I, generally speaking, have no problem with. Generally speaking. Again, it’s very little change in terms of the sound, which I can’t really get into unless the circumstances are just right.

I echo Smurph's review when I say this had a lot of great stuff on it, with a couple misfires. In my case, however, the misfires actually did well with some of my roommates, and all in all there was no one track all four of us didn't like. Jully Black is going to be seeing my dollar soon, as I'm going to go buy albums of hers and display them to others like some sort of retarded second grader who made a macaroni picture. I approve of this CD- thanks!

Another great kitty disc. Stuff you love already; stuff you love now that you've heard it; a little bit of stuff you don't mind hearing again even if it's not your favorite ever. The only track I really didn't like was from Arctic Monkeys. And I was (mostly) kidding about Coheed & Cambria. But to this old fart, the sound of that particular song is a bit retro -- if you can call late 80s/early 90s prog retro. Still, I must now go dig up my Operation: Mindcrime cassette. Thanks, l_k!
