Both companies came to (and signed) an agreement about 20 years ago that said that neither company would exploit the initials, but could both keep the names of their companies.
The World Wildlife Fund repeatedly told the World Wrestling Federation to stop brandishing everything they done with the "WWF" logo, but the Wrestling Federation continually ignored them, until eventually the Wildlife Fund took them to court and won.
Therefore, the Wrestling Federation had to spend loads of time changing their whole image and training their "talent" to say "WWE" instead of "WWF".
