Nice and late as god intended, here's my tracklist and commentary:
1. Sparklehorse - It's a Wonderful Life
"after a Sparklehorse live date in London, [Mark] Linkous nearly died when he passed out after mixing Valium with prescription antidepressants; throughout the 14 hours he spent unconscious on his hotel's bathroom floor his legs were pinned under the rest of his body, and the prolonged loss of blood circulation nearly left him crippled."
2. Spoon - Stay Don't Go
I like Spoon when they're all up in your face and poppy most of all. This song is off of Kill the Moonlight, but if you like Spoon, the album to get is Girls Can Tell, in my humble opinion.
3. Clinic - Return of Evil Bill
Clinic is very fun to sing along with.
4. Sparklehorse - King of Nails
I... like this song.
5. Apples in Stereo - About Your Fame
This song is way pretty.
6. Frente - Bizarre Love Triangle
This is a very sweet folk cover of a New Order song.
7. Bob Dylan - The Man in Me
Not the biggest Dylan fan, but I love this one. Possibly because I hadn't heard it a million times by the time I was 10. It was featured in the movie The Big Lebowski which probably amps up my love for it.
8. Flaming Groovies - Slow Death
I bought a several-CD punk compilation and this was one of the only songs I really liked on it. The recording is kind of crappy, but it works for me. I really loved the song and I went out and bought a Flaming Groovies best of CD and it just wasn't as good. All the tracks had a kind of lame 80s production feel to them and they didn't quite scream or rock nearly as hard as they do in this recording. I do wish it was a bit clearer though.
9. The Ramones - Judy is a Punk
This was the other song on the punk compilation that I really liked. It's kind of stupid of me but despite being into punk as a teenager I never listened to any Ramones except for maybe Blitzkrieg Bop which I wasn't really a big fan of. I find this song to be catchy as hell.
10. Barcelona - I Have the Password to Your Shell Account
I can't remember how I found out about these guys. They were net famous a while back mostly because they wrote music about nerdy subjects. This song however is actually really great. Catchy, poppy and fun. The nerd angle is just a bonus.
11. Unknown - Lonesome Valley
I was downloading a compilation called "Negro Spirituals" off of Audiogalaxy a year or two ago and this song happened to be in the batch. Despite it cutting off kind of badly at the very end I really like it.
12. Nick Drake - Pink Moon
This is one song on the list of many that car commercials have introduced me to. Sad and beautiful and so on.
13. The Shins - The Past and Pending
I heard a lot of people talk about The Shins. People on the net told me about The Shins. My girlfriend bought The Shins album and told me about The Shins. It seemed like everyone liked The Shins but I just didn't. I forced myself to listen to the album, demanding myself to like it and on the sixth listen it turned into one of the best albums I heard in 2002. As far as I know I'm the only person who experienced that problem.
14. The Beach Boys - Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)
This is a sweet little Beach Boys song off of Pet Sounds, which is an amazing album.
15. The Avalanches - Little Journey
Even though I really like The Avalanches it's hard to put them on mix CDs because the whole album flows together.
16. Althia & Donna - Uptown Top Ranking
I found this song while downloading random Jamaican music on Audiogalaxy. This was the only song out of like 50 that I liked. I really enjoy the way the lyrics shift around. There's a structure and a pattern but it seems to always be evolving and isn't quite verse/chorus/verse. I also don't understand anything being said in the lyrics.
17. Tricky - Ponderosa
Maxinquaye is a fantastic album and it could have been this song or almost any of the other ones on it.
18. Grandaddy - Miner at the Dial-A-View
Grandaddy's new album should be coming out in a month or two and is one of my most eagerly anticipated. The Sophtware Slump was such a great album I can't even write more than this about it.
19. Cat Stevens - Trouble
From the soundtrack of Harold & Maude, a movie my girlfriend made me see when we were first getting to know each other and I cried like a wussy.
20. Kinobe - Slip into Something
This just stood out among a lot of other songs on a giant mp3 cd I was given.
21. Guided By Voices - Chasing Heather Crazy
I understand Guided By Voices are a popular underground band. I had never really heard much by them and didn't know what the deal was. I got a copy of their album Isolation Drills and there was some very good stuff on there. I find this one really catchy. The other song I really love on the album is Pivotal Film and it's quite different from this one.
22. Money Mark - Maybe I'm Dead
This is fun and funky and recorded live.
23. Hot Piss - Our Gary's Electric
This is a local-ish band and they are cool.
24. Apples in Stereo - Shine a Light
Holy cow do I love this song. I must have listened to it a kabillion times by now.
25. The Go-Go's - Our Lips are Sealed
Some retro-80's pop which I quite enjoy.
That is all I have to say. I hope somebody liked something on it.
