I don't even see why the 360 has to exist, the Xbox's capabilities aren't near being reached yet. They could squeeze so much more out of the Xbox graphically, but instead they're opting to screw over their old hardware for an all new setup. Are they going to do the same with the 360? Sure, it's a powerful machine, but what's the point if Microsoft doesn't even make use of most of it's ability? These people need to look at their hardware and make the most of what they got, instead of simply progressing for the sake of progress.

Not to pick a fight with you Melkor, but most consoles released within the last 10 years have cost more to make than what their retail price is, at least during the first year or (two in some cases) of it's release. Sony, Nintendo, and MS are more than willing to post a loss on the console in hopes that they would profit from in-house software releases and 3rd party licensing fees.

I think "cost of production" is a bit misleading. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that a lot of the cost comes from R&D and advertising. I'm sure it's no $35 to produce an X-Box, but I'm betting the cost for materials and such is lower than $400. I'm guessing somewhere around $100.

But then, at the same time, I have to think it has to be more than that. A new video card costs around $400 by itself, not to mention a processor, RAM and hard drive.

No, companies do lose money on new consoles released. I think when the X Box was released, they were losing around $200 per machine.

Aren't the PS3 and Nintendo news bits just paper? Neither of them have any hardware actually built and working. At least MS has the parts for the 360 ready (or is that Apple that has the parts?). Sony and Nintendo are just scrambling to keep their fanboys interested. There is no fucking way that Sony will EVER deliver the kind of hardware they always promise.

although i think that 35$ was the manufacturing price (not counting advertising and distribution costs, and they have long, long ago recouped the R&D costs) to the slimer PS2.

Microsoft planed to brake even on the Xbox around MAy 2004 , so they have already packed a pretty nifty sum from then on.

I have no idea about Nintendo, but Sony showed PS3 in-game footage at E3. Obviously it's already built and they're just trouble-shooting and refining it now.

No,no. In the same way that MS was demoing it's xbox stuff on Apple G5s, Sony's demos were not running on the hardware they imagine they'll be using in the PS3. The diference is MS has working chips from their vendors and Sony has dreams and an empty PS3 box.

I agree with that all the way, except Playstation will always sell more because they were really there first pioneering new graphics and such. I think the X-box was underrated because of its size and everyone thought that it wouldn't get any good 3rd party games. Well, granted that the X-box doesn't have the best games, it has some of the best looking games. Hopefully this new 360 will turn some heads with an even better online environment, more 3rd party games, and backward capability (which i hear is 99.9% likely).

From what Ive heard the PS3 is supposed to be the shit hot next gen console (games wise anyways) but I dont believe in the craftmanship of Sony to create anything that wont break down within 3 months of purchase, hence I wont be getting one.

XBox 360 supposedly had a poor showing at E3, with its most hyped game (Perfect dark zero, I think) not being displayed as the programming was pantaloons(Such is the ability of rare without team goldeneye). The best game Micro had to offer was a Need for speed game!?

The thing is, noone really knows. The thing is using all new technology (Cell, RSX video card, Blue-ray and I'm sure about 16 other things), so it really is impossible to tell exactly what the PS3 will be like.

The backwards-compatability thing is the only thing the new Nintendo box has going for it, in my opinion. I just have to question how one is going to *do* this. Will the console have a bunch of slots for old games? I heard something about loading on ROMs, rather than just plugging in the games. If that's so, will it reject all those old SNES/NES/Whatever ROMs I have on my computer?

It would be cool to pop those onto a real Nintendo box with perfect emulation on a big TV and play those old games.

You download the games directly onto the console from a service Nintendo will be providing. The "Revolution" is still in the controllers though, which Nintendo has yet to reveal. So far the top two guesses are motion sensing gyroscopes or touch-pads.

My poor Playstation is falling apart. I need to get a new one, but can't decide if I should get one now or wait for the new one. I guess until then I'll just have to stick to stealing cars, murdering hookers, and blowing shit up.

Wait for the new one. It's only a year off. It looks unbelievably cool... (although what was seen at E3 probably won't be matched by the actual system, but I'm sure it will still be great). More importantly its backwards compatible, so you can still play your PS1 games and any PS2 game you might like as well.
