Right after 9-11 someone could have stood on a street corner calling people packing into recruitment offices idiots and been perfectly safe? I really doubt that.

In any event that's not my point. If you are equating Ted Rall to a raving lunatic I'd have to agree, though.

It is still considered pretty inflamatory to suggest we don't have cause to go into Afghanistan. Remember the whole Bill Maher getting fired thing?

So this comic is right on the money? Does it "know what the fuck it's talking about?"

I have no issue either way with the comic. I could care less about it. I neither think it's 'right on the money' (which, you infer that I think that, and is merely another one of your suggestive tactics) nor do I think it is complete bullshit.

Also, nowhere in that comic does it mention anything about Afghanistan. All I see is a comic about drafting.

As for Ted Rall, you did not say he would be standing on the street corner on 9-12. Not at all. You said "I'd like to see", which infers a possible future occurance. If you had said "I would have like to have seen", then you wouldn't look like the schmuck you are.

And if you really thought on 9-12 that someone calling people saps walking into a recruiting office would get them killed, like I said, you know jack shit about New York City. First off, too many people going into those recruiting offices were not doing it out of some righteous anger. People in that area were HURT and SCARED. No one (and I say this loosely, because I'm sure there were a few against the fighting the tide) wanted any more violence, MaKK. We're not all governed by our more baser instincts as you are.

MSNBC replaced the comic because it was so offensive. Here's what is used to be.

I have no idea what you are saying. In any event, your reasoning was "an adovate of the black Israelite cause isn't mobbed, therefore someone calling the people who went to war after 9-11 in Afghanistan idiots wouldn't be mobbed to death" isn't "evidence." That's you opinion. Even if it's true, my point is saying something like that is only inflammatory. I don't know how you could justify that as political speech at all, and IF you did get mobbed I'm sure the courts would say you had it coming because of your inflammatory speech. The first ammendment doesn't protect "fighting words". Looks like neither does MSNBC.

Oh I get it, you just wanted to point out you live in New York City. That's why this you expect me to treat your opinions as fact.

You live in New York city therefore you know what they were all thinking. I gotcha.

You know that no one was angry becuase you live in New York City. I see. Interesting.

No one wanted retribution on the terrorists and those harbouring them. How could you know this? You could only know this if you...if you lived in New York! Ah ha! That's why you know this.

Why would you rush to sign up for the military after 9-11? Because you were hurt and scared and wanted no more violence? Is that why? You're right, that makes sense.

Okay, what I neglected to mention is that the Black Isrealites are inflammatory, plain and simple. They stood out on the street corners after 9-11 and applauded the destruction of the towers because it will bring down the white man, who they blame for all the world's problems and make sure everyone knows that when the black revolution comes they will be killing white people, women and children, before anyone else.

Now that you know that, you DON'T live in New York City and you think you've got a better idea of the sentiment here? There were tons more people rushing to help the Ground Zero crews and collect water and donate food and such than there were to sign up for the military right after 9-11. As a matter of fact, so many people showed up offering to help that they had to ask them instead to just send supplies. There were lines all right, but they were to sign up for the Fire Department and Police Department civil service exams.

Seriously, stick to what you know.

There's still a difference between being crazy and being inflammatory.

"Stick to what you know"? Are you saying this comic isn't inflammatory? Because that's my point.

I still don't think this is proof Ted Rall wouldn't be attacked, it's your opinion. I don't think he would harass people on the streets with the ideas he presents in the comic, because he would fear for getting punched in the face. Yes, that's my opinion. Saying "stick to what you know" is moronic unless you KNOW he wouldn't get punched in the face.

In fact, if I knew Ted Rall was scheduled to be on a street corner in New York saying these things, I'd go punch him in the face. So you're wrong. He could get attacked. Because I would go do it.

Stick to what you know, Mikey. Stick to what you know.

I'm not quite sure what your point is, if you're point isn't "the comic is not inflammatory".

You EXPECT crazy people on the street corner to say crazy things. You don't EXPECT a news outlet to publish hateful, inflammatory speech.

I'm tired of hearing about Tillman. Yes, it is a shame that he died. Any soldier who dies while fighting for our country deserves our respect. But...

Everyone talks about how he gave up that big football career to enlist, to which I say...so what? Why should Tillman be honored more than any other soldier who died over there? How many other people left families behind? Are they not as important as an athlete? Funny, you don't see a "normal" soldier who dies in combat getting that kind of attention when they quit a 9-5 job to sign up. Would Pat Tillman have been remembered in any way, shape or form if he hadn't been a former pro football player? Nope, and that's sad.

I'm of the same opinion, but I don't demonize Tillman for being honored (as Rall does), I think it's a failure of the media. Suddenly they care about honoring a soldier because he was a celebrity? Give me a break.

I think Rall's the same way, but in bizarro world. Suddenly he cares about demonizing Rall because he's popular.

That said, like any other soldier, I wouldn't assume he signed up after 9-11 to "kill Arabs", or that he could forsee Bush invading Iraq and be "duped" by this policy.

Another problem I have is that Rall portrays the Afghanistan war as anything but inevitable, as if Bush was "to blame" for invading. If Bush, or any president, sat on his or her ass after 9-11, they would have been impeached, that is if the military didn't over throw him or her first.

It ain't just on this level. Here in Washington, the only way the killing of a teenager makes news is if (s)he was a jock. Play ball, and you get tons of tearful column inches in the Post. Don't, and you're just another insignificant statistic.

I don't think Rall is demonizing Tillman; rather, I think he's satirizing in the least subtle, most biting way, the reaction to his death.

Same thing happens here, kaufman. Not to discount what happened, but the Dru Sjodin kidnapping is a good example of this. It seems that those who are from a well-to-do family, and are good-looking get all the press when they turn up missing, yet the not-so-well-off might see the back page in a one column blurb.

I like that part of the defense of running the comic in the first place is that the feeds are "rarely reviewed".

"We're a large media outlet, but some of our content we republished is rarely reviewed."

Way to go, assholes!

I noticed Ted Rall is gone all together from their comics page.

Here's a good ctitique of MSNBC, for being, well, completely stupid:

If I recall something similar happened with Michael Savage on live TV when they let a prank caller get into his earpiece and incite him to politically incorrect remarks. Had they never heard him speak before? Did they not think buffering the show a little was a good idea? It'd be different if it was Marthe Stewart on the air who started spouting obscenities, you could claim ignorance then.

quote:
Forget the editors. Would the lawyers working for a magazine or newspaper allow such a policy to exist? Not bloody likely.

Come to think of it, I'm betting MSNBC does have some human review set up and they are simply lying through their teeth about the "automated feed." The Rall obscenity was probably reviewed by some entry-level editor who is a special pet of Wright's and who thought it was funny and saw nothing wrong with it. He or she probably thought, "Hey, dump on the troops? That's what we do here. Up it goes."

And not because it's anything you could remotely consider on topic?

I have problem with people who purport themselves as political commentators when they are really just shock artists and "entertainers". You can shock and inflame, and you can make a valid political point, but I don't think you can be in the business of doing both.

The political cartoon I would love to see is Beetle Baily ripped apart by Iraqi insurgents. Not because of any particular feelings I have about the war, but the fact that it would be the end of that lame comic strip.

To be a political cartoon the giant beetle would have to have what it was a metaphor for written across it, like "IRAQI ABUSE PHOTOS". And then Beetle Baily would have "AMERICAN CREDIBILITY" written on him. And they'd need a clever caption underneath, like, "The Beetles of War!"
