Ok, so I decided to go slumming earlier and peruse the RMDC forum where I came across a couple threads where the topic of "comics that mock Christianity" came up.

Personally, I'm not real big on the whole religion thing, so I have no problem with poking fun at religious stuff, as evidenced by quite a few of my strips.

I figured this would be a good topic of discussion. Sorry if there's already been a thread like this before, I'm too damned lazy to go back and look through the oldies.

So...is it right or wrong to mock religion in comics here at SC?

Discuss.

It's right to be funny here, whether or not that involves incorporating religious themes. Ideally, the humor will not be too mean-spirited (because then it often ceases to be funny), but rather something both adherents and outsiders can laugh at.

I reguard comics mocking religion (any religion) to be up there with the racist comics. Now I have seen religious comics that weren't mean-spirited that WERE funny. I have no problem with those. But it seems 99% of the comics containing religious themes were made by people who thought it was funny to completely bash it.

Normally, I do ignore it. After all, if I'm steaming mad and I post on a thread, I usually just blow up at the person. I try to avoid it. But that time, I just exploded. And I do apologize to MikeyG and everyone else for the flame treatment (I already apologized on that particular thread, but I dont think niteowl or MikeyG read it so I will say it again). I had no right to flame like that. So again, I apologize for my actions.

*bashes Christianity*

Get the general idea?

Spirituality is fine, and I can respect it. What I do NOT respect, especially being raised Roman Catholic, is when a religion starts getting down to 'forbidding' things. Everyone has the freedom to be in whatever religion they like, but I am vigorously opposed to organized religion.

If you decide to go and announce yourself as a Christian, then be prepared to take some shit for it. You want to voice your opinions on religion because you see everyone else doing it, be prepared to have opposition.

Mikey, I totally agree.

I was baptized Roman Catholic, and I went to a Catholic school for 11 out of my 13 years of school, but we were never really "devout" because my step-dad was baptized Lutheran, and my brother and sister were just never baptized (until a few years ago, and they were RC... but oh well).

Anyway, it was in my high school Christian Ethics (Religion) class, that I started learning about all this stuff that we are just "not allowed to do", which got me really ticked off, and led to my newfound athiesm(spelled that wrong, but meh).

That, and I think Roman Catholicism is a cult. :D

I can understand how Roman Catholocism could have turned you off to religion. Mom was catholic and turned away from religion all together for a long time. I was baptised catholic and was athiestic for a long time (My faith is a little over a year old). But there's a lot of extreme rules in the catholic church and rituals that most people dont even know the meaning of. Catholocism has a bad history in Europe of killing people, trying to opress and control people, and of abusing their power.

This is not going after catholicism in general. There ARE other christian extremists that do bad things in the world. Look at the Salem witch trials. They were Puritans (who also believed that the more God loved you, the more munny and stuff he gave you, which is totally not true). There are the TV evangelists who steal. And the extremists who blow up abortion clinics (to save lives...which is like fornicating to preserve virginity ). There's a lot of corruption in the preisthoods and reverends who have run astray.

No. I dont think thats what my sis means. Its okay to bash corruption in a religion as long as you don't go overboard. Reguardless of whatever spiritual walk you're on, there's usually corruption. Just as long as you dun't take it out on the actual belief system. I just dun't like people to start attacking Jesus. Attacking hypocracy is just fine (I've been hypocrytical at times myself). ...Speaking of my own hypocracy, I read your response comic to my flame comic, Mikey, and I found it hilarious. Nice shot! I did deserve it for exploding like that.

I have seen comics on this site that are really funny that do use the Jesus thing without it going to the point of actually bashing Jesus. I kinda liked the one shown on this thread in particular.

And Jesus IS yummy except for the baptist version of communion. The baptist version doesn't taste too good, but it will put hair on your chest.

Methodists are the best. They have holy Ribena instead of sacramental wine.

It is often unwise to directly attack a person's deeply held beliefs about any subject*, and religion is particularly sensitive. Gentle mockery is another matter, and nobody secure in their beliefs should be bothered by such things.

*Except Mormons. Mormons are fair game.

I take making online comics differently from having a conversation one-on-one with a believer. I have no problem with blaming fundamentalist Christianity for the end-of-the-world mentality we have running US policy right now. But when in person and having a conversation I would probably respectfully decline to participate in a religious conversation with them. It just doesn't feel like it would accomplish anything beyond getting us both riled up. Online blather like comics, on the other hand, should never be taken personally. It's just the world blowing off steam.

Deal.

The same goes for other "announcments". I have no problem with homosexuals, but when someone suddenly becomes flamboyant and runs around wearing rainbow flags and speaking in an unnatural lisp, "coming out", the same logic should be followed.

"I'm Christian" "You have faith in a God who hasn't proven his own existence? You're STUPID!"

"I'm gay" "You have sex with other men? Don't you see that's unnatural? You're STUPID!"

See? The former is okay these days, the latter... not so okay. Except in Georgia. But they have sex with relatives, so they're pretty much doomed anyway.

All I'm really saying is, do you agree that anyone who openly expresses/announces something is subject to criticism and ridicule?

It's one thing to have a belief system discussed with you in a reasonable, adult fashion. But alot of us have had the Savior on a Stick thrown at us since we were old enough to chew solid food. I think a certain amount of backlash has to be expected. As long as the Christianity enjoys the benefits of a huge tradition of indoctrination in the West, it will also have to tolerate a certain amount of scorn from those who've rejected that indoctrination.

I have absolutely no problem with it. I'd just like to see everyone back the hell off people who criticize other religions and such.

Some of us were *not* force fed Christian belief, and still more actually struggled to come to terms with what they believe in. I personally do not sit proudly atop the cloud with St. Peter at the gates, but I have my ideas of what is going on. In any case, I support equal rights. Christians being told they are wrong for telling wiccans are wrong, then being told that they are wrong because they are christian are probably going to have a bloody aneurism when they sit down and think about the idiocy that lies there.

One thing I'd like to remind all you america-hating, christianity-loathing induhviduals out there... In america, you have the right to say "Nah, don't believe in that God", and not get stoned, shot, crucified, drowned, buried, drawn and quartered, or even beheaded! Not even a slap on the hand! Sure, this country was raised on christian morals, and christian values, and christian scripture was placed in everything that signifies this country, but at least the church doesn't have to sanction every goddamn McDonald's. Just imagine being an athiest in early catholic rome. "So, what do you think of this new 'one god' stuff?" "I don't believe in any god, or gods." "HERETIC!!" "OFF WITH HIS HEAD!" and so forth.

You put out that opinion these days, the worst you're going to hear is "God loves you, why won't you love him?"

Anyway, done ranting.
