Stick to the basic formulas, that works for me. Just find a comic that's written in a similar way to your own and read it until your brain shuts down. Sooner or later you'll start to think in terms of punchlines and they'll basically write themselves.
Try not to be too gratuitous either- you're not going to offend anyone using a limited set of transparent GIF characters that only have one expression, and it's only killing the humour.
Ironically the woman in the red dress was a girl I knew from a forum that turned out to be an effeminate dude.
